Understanding the Certified Nurse Practitioner (CNP) role

February 16, 2024

The Nurse Practitioner study is based on nursing theory. This area of study focuses on whole-person care and a holistic approach to health and wellness. Nurse Practitioners are trained to assess patient needs, order and interpret diagnostic and laboratory tests, diagnose disease, formulate and prescribe medications, and treatment plans. Nurse Practitioners can practice independently.

Nurse Practitioners (NPs) require at least a Masters degree. Beyond the degree, clinical experience and a state board exam are required before they become certified to practice as an NP. Many nurse practitioners begin their career working as an RN, and then decide to advance their degree and practice.

Someone who followed a similar path from RN to CNP is Melissa Walker. Melissa joined Mille Lacs Health System in March of 2022.  Before that, she worked as an RN for 15 years at Mercy Hospital in Coon Rapids.

Melissa says, “I decided to go back to school to become an NP because I wanted to be able to develop a trusting relationship with my patients to help them be their healthiest and happiest selves.  I have a passion for working with the elderly population as well as helping those that are struggling with addiction.”

Melissa Walker lives in Onamia with her husband and four dogs.  Together she and her husband have five children.  In her free time, Melissa loves to travel, craft, and spend time with my family and pets.

If you’re overdue for a medical appointment, or have some concerns you need to address with a provider you can see Melissa Walker at various Mille Lacs Health System clinic locations. Call 320-532-3154, and press one to schedule an appointment.
