September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness of one of the most serious cancers affecting women. According to the American Cancer Society, about 21,000 women in the United States will receive a new diagnosis of ovarian cancer this year. The disease often goes undetected until it has advanced, in part because early symptoms can be subtle or mistaken for less serious health concerns. Increased awareness and early conversations with healthcare providers remain essential to improving outcomes.
To show support and raise awareness, employees across Mille Lacs Health System (MLHS) are wearing custom teal ribbon t-shirts each Friday throughout the month of September. The teal ribbon is a nationally recognized symbol of ovarian cancer awareness. A portion of the proceeds from each shirt supports ovarian cancer research, while the remainder benefits Key Contributors, the MLHS employee giving group that helps fund projects to enhance both patient and staff experience.
A special message from Andy Knutson, CEO, highlights the personal significance of this cause:
“Ovarian cancer hits close to home for me. I watched my mother face this diagnosis more than 15 years ago, and I am grateful it was caught early. She is a survivor, and still with us today. Survival rates improve significantly with early detection. Because symptoms can be subtle, I encourage anyone with concerns to speak with their primary care provider. I’m proud that our team at MLHS is helping raise awareness this month.”
Ovarian cancer can be difficult to detect in its early stages. Symptoms may include bloating, pelvic or abdominal pain, feeling full quickly when eating, or urinary symptoms. These symptoms may appear mild and can mimic other less serious health issues. However, if they persist for more than two weeks, especially in women over 50 or with a family history of cancer, it’s important to consult a provider.
This month, MLHS is proud to join the national effort by supporting ovarian cancer awareness and sharing a message of prevention, early detection, and community care. The teal ribbon may be small, but its message is powerful. Whether it’s wearing teal, having a conversation, or learning the signs, every effort helps bring attention to a disease that too often goes unnoticed.
If you have concerns about ovarian cancer symptoms or would like to schedule an appointment with a provider at Mille Lacs Health System, call 320-532-3154, and press one. Early detection can save lives, so don’t wait to speak up about your health.
