Facing surgery can feel overwhelming, but preparation makes a big difference in how smoothly recovery goes. Mille Lacs Health System offers a program called pre-habilitation, or “pre-hab,” for patients scheduled for shoulder, knee, or ankle surgery. Pre-hab is a short-term therapy service designed to help patients enter surgery informed, equipped, and confident about the recovery process.
With a referral from your provider, patients attend one or two appointments with a rehabilitation specialist. These sessions focus on practical strategies that reduce stress and support healing after surgery. Patients review weight-bearing restrictions, practice mobility expectations, and get fitted for assistive devices such as crutches, walkers, or slings. Guidance on icing, elevation, and safe sleep positioning is provided, along with incision care and showering instructions tailored to each surgery type.
Pre-hab also introduces basic exercises to promote early movement and strength. For example, patients preparing for ankle surgery may practice ankle pumps or toe curls, while those scheduled for knee surgery may begin gentle quad sets or straight leg raises. Shoulder pre-hab often includes pendulum exercises and sling use education. Each plan is individualized, ensuring patients leave their appointment with clear instructions, written resources, and the knowledge to practice at home with confidence.
In addition to exercises, therapists provide training with equipment and discuss common concerns, such as when driving may be possible again or how to safely return to work or school. By practicing these routines ahead of time, patients know what to expect and can prepare their home environment to match their post-surgical needs. Even small adjustments, like preparing meals in advance or setting up a safe resting space, can make recovery easier.
Pre-hab services are offered at Mille Lacs Health System locations in Onamia, Isle, and Milaca.
