Mammograms Save Lives

October 23, 2025

October is recognized nationally as Breast Cancer Awareness Month - a reminder for women to take an active role in their health through early detection. Mille Lacs Health System (MLHS) is proud to offer advanced 3D mammography, the most effective screening tool for detecting breast cancer early, when it’s most treatable.

Some women hesitate to schedule a mammogram due to the perception that it is too uncomfortable. The good news is that mammograms are quick; each 3D image takes only nine seconds to capture. Typically, four images are taken, sometimes six depending on breast tissue type. In just a few moments, patients can complete a screening that could save their life.

Each year, MLHS performs an average of 800 mammograms. These screenings are conducted under strict federal and professional guidelines to ensure quality and safety. The Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA), a federal law enacted in 1992, requires all mammography facilities to meet rigorous standards. MLHS undergoes an annual inspection, reviewing radiologist, technologist, and physicist credentials, continuing education, and other essential quality measures.

In addition, MLHS is accredited by the American College of Radiology (ACR), a process completed every three years. This accreditation is even more detailed, involving the review of actual mammogram images to confirm high-quality work. The ACR may also perform random checks between accreditation cycles to ensure consistent standards.

Every patient at Mille Lacs Health System receives a 3D mammogram, which provides a clearer, more detailed image than traditional 2D scans. For patients at higher risk, a complete breast ultrasound can also be used as an additional screening tool.

According to the American Cancer Society, one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. The encouraging news is that breast cancer is one of the most treatable cancers, with a 90% survival rate when detected early and localized. While family history is a risk factor, only about 15% of women diagnosed with breast cancer have a family history, meaning regular screenings are important for everyone.

Yearly breast screening is typically recommended for women (with average risk of breast cancer) starting at age 40. Those with a higher risk due strong family history of breast cancer should consult with their medical provider on whether they would benefit from a mammogram at an earlier age. Most insurance companies cover the cost of preventative screenings such as mammograms every one to two years for women 40 years and older. As always, check with your insurance to verify eligibility.

Although much less common, breast cancer can also affect men. About 1 in 833 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetime, according to the American Cancer Society. Men should not ignore potential warning signs such as a lump or swelling in the chest area, nipple discharge, changes to the skin around the nipple (such as dimpling, scaling, or redness), or nipple retraction. Because men are less likely to suspect breast cancer, diagnosis often occurs at a later stage, making awareness especially important.

Early detection truly saves lives. Take a moment to schedule your 3D mammogram with Mille Lacs Health System by calling 320-532-3154. Encourage the women, and men, in your life to stay alert to any changes and speak with their healthcare provider about any concerns.
