MLHS Lab Expands Rapid Respiratory Testing

December 19, 2025

The Mille Lacs Health System Laboratory has added new rapid molecular testing technology that will improve diagnostic accuracy and reduce wait times for patients. The laboratory recently acquired a Cepheid GeneXpert system, a state-of-the-art device that allows staff to perform highly sensitive PCR testing for several common and contagious respiratory illnesses onsite at the hospital and clinics.

The new system runs two important types of rapid tests. The first is a Group A Streptococcus test, which detects strep throat infections with a high level of accuracy. The second is a 4-Plex respiratory panel that is able to test for Influenza A, Influenza B, COVID-19, and RSV from a single sample.

“These tests give us the ability to provide fast, reliable results for our patients and providers,” said Laurie Rensenbrink, MLHS Laboratory Manager. “It means that patients can get an accurate diagnosis and start appropriate treatment sooner, without waiting for results to be sent out.”

The Cepheid GeneXpert system relies on molecular PCR technology, which is known for its sensitivity and specificity. Results are typically available within an hour. This is especially valuable during the winter months, when viral respiratory illnesses often circulate at the same time and can present with similar symptoms. Rapid testing supports timely decision-making for providers and helps guide isolation precautions, treatment plans, and follow-up care.

This upgrade also strengthens infection control efforts across the organization. By performing these tests onsite, the MLHS Laboratory reduces delays associated with sending samples to outside facilities. Faster turnaround times allow for improved patient flow and a better overall care experience.

Rapid respiratory testing is particularly important this season. According to the Minnesota Department of Health’s December 4 update, there have been 143 flu-related hospitalizations statewide so far. Minnesota also recorded a sharp increase in weekly flu activity, with 70 hospitalizations in the most recent reporting period compared to 15 during the same week last year. These early trends show that flu activity is rising more quickly than in the previous season.

With flu circulating across the state, MLHS encourages community members to stay up to date on preventive measures, including vaccination. Flu shots remain available at the Mille Lacs Health System Community Pharmacies in Onamia and Isle during regular pharmacy vaccine hours, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Adults may receive their vaccine on a walk-in basis. Youth under 18 years old may schedule an appointment with a clinic nurse by calling 320-532-3154.

The addition of the Cepheid GeneXpert system reflects Mille Lacs Health System’s commitment to ensuring that patients have access to accurate testing and timely results close to home. As respiratory illnesses increase during the winter season, rapid testing plays an important role in helping patients receive the right care at the right time.
