May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a time to recognize the important role emotional well-being plays in overall wellness. Mental health affects how individuals think, feel, and respond to everyday stress, relationships, work, and daily responsibilities. Just like physical health, emotional wellness can change over time and deserves regular attention and support.
Mental health challenges are common and can affect people of all ages. Stress, anxiety, depression, grief, isolation, and emotional exhaustion can all influence daily life, sometimes gradually and without obvious warning signs. Mental health concerns are not always easy to recognize and may appear through changes in sleep, energy, mood, concentration, motivation, or social interaction. For some individuals, everyday responsibilities may begin to feel more difficult to manage over time.
While mental health concerns can look different for each individual, small habits can help support overall well-being. Regular physical activity, healthy sleep habits, social connection, time outdoors, and open conversations with trusted family members, friends, or healthcare providers can all play a role in maintaining mental wellness. Seeking support is an important part of overall wellness and should be viewed no differently than addressing physical symptoms or medical concerns.
Behavioral health support, including psychology and telehealth psychiatry services, is available through Mille Lacs Health System. Individuals experiencing ongoing mental health concerns are encouraged to talk with their healthcare provider about available resources and support options.
Throughout the month of May, Mille Lacs Health System employees are wearing green-ribbon t-shirts each Friday to help raise awareness and support community conversations around mental health. Proceeds from shirt sales support Smiles for Jake, a suicide prevention movement focused on spreading positivity and encouraging supportive actions within communities. This year’s fundraiser raised $1,245 to support the organization’s efforts.
Mental Health Awareness Month serves as a reminder that emotional well-being is an important part of overall wellness. Continuing conversations around mental health, supporting one another, and encouraging access to care can help strengthen individuals, families, and communities over time.
