Primary Care: The Right Care at the Right Time

August 14, 2026

Primary care is about much more than annual checkups. From preventive care and sick visits to chronic disease management and specialized services, Mille Lacs Health System offers comprehensive primary care for patients of all ages. Our scheduling team will help determine the right appointment based on your needs, but here's an overview of some of the most common visit types.

Preventive Care

Preventive visits help you stay healthy and may include annual physicals, routine screenings, immunizations, and sports physicals. These visits monitor overall health, identify concerns early, and keep you current with recommended screenings and vaccines. Sports physicals are more focused and may not replace a comprehensive annual physical or well-child visit.

Annual Wellness Visit

An Annual Wellness Visit focuses on reviewing your overall health risks and creating or updating a personalized prevention plan. It may include review of medical history, medications, screenings, vaccines, fall risk, memory, and advance care planning. It is not the same as a routine physical and is not intended to evaluate new symptoms or provide detailed chronic disease management.

Establish Care

Establish-care visits are for patients who are new to Mille Lacs Health System. Your provider will review your medical history, medications, allergies, chronic conditions, preventive care needs, and ongoing concerns.

Illnesses and Injuries

Acute care visits are appropriate for new illnesses or injuries such as cough, sore throat, ear infection, fever, rash, urinary symptoms, minor injuries, abdominal pain, or sudden worsening of a condition. These visits focus on the immediate concern rather than routine chronic disease management.

Managing Ongoing Health Conditions

Patients living with chronic conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, asthma, COPD, thyroid disease, heart disease, anxiety, or depression often benefit from regular follow-up visits. These appointments allow your provider to review your progress, discuss lab results, adjust treatment plans when needed, and help keep chronic conditions well managed.

Medication Management

Medication visits may be needed to evaluate effectiveness, discuss side effects, adjust doses, or complete required monitoring. Visit frequency depends on the medication, your health needs, and monitoring requirements.

Specialized Visits

Primary care providers may also offer preoperative medical clearances, prenatal care, DOT physicals, office procedures, and telehealth for appropriate follow-up or medical concerns. Telehealth requires provider approval.

Children's Health

Children have unique healthcare needs as they grow. In addition to well-child checkups and sports physicals, Mille Lacs Health System provides care for childhood illnesses and injuries, developmental concerns, medication follow-ups, and appointments to establish care. Our providers partner with families to help children stay healthy from infancy through adolescence.
