New Technology Enhances Echocardiography at MLHS

October 2, 2026

Mille Lacs Health System has added a new Philips EPIQ 7 cardiac ultrasound system to its Radiology Department, providing enhanced imaging capabilities and additional information to help providers evaluate heart health.

An echocardiogram, often called an echo, uses ultrasound to create images of the heart. The images allow healthcare providers to evaluate the heart's structure, function and valves.

The new system offers improved image quality and provides physicians with greater detail and data when evaluating patients. Among the EPIQ 7's capabilities is 3D ejection fraction quantification, which helps evaluate how well the heart is pumping.

The system also includes myocardial strain imaging to evaluate heart muscle function, including for oncology and cardiomyopathy patients. Enhanced color flow mapping provides additional imaging for assessing heart valve conditions such as regurgitation, when blood flows backward through a valve, and stenosis, when a valve becomes narrowed. An upgraded stress echo imaging package also allows for better assessment of the movement of different areas of the heart muscle.

Additional technology includes an xMatrix transducer that allows technologists to capture multiple views of the heart without changing the position of the probe. PureWave crystal technology is designed to enhance image depth and quality, including for patients who may be more difficult to image. The system also allows patients to view images during the exam.

The new equipment was purchased by Central Minnesota Diagnostics, Inc. (CMDI), which partners with MLHS to provide echocardiography services.

Echocardiograms are available at MLHS on Tuesdays and Thursdays through a provider referral.
