Diabetes Awareness Month: Education and Support for Better Health

October 23, 2026

November is National Diabetes Month, a time to raise awareness about diabetes and the importance of education, prevention, and ongoing support. Whether someone is newly diagnosed or has been living with diabetes for years, understanding the condition and developing practical management skills can make a meaningful difference in their health.

Managing diabetes involves more than monitoring blood sugar. Nutrition, physical activity, medications, and other daily decisions can all affect blood glucose levels. Because each person's needs and experiences are different, individualized education can help people better understand their condition and make informed decisions about their care.

Diabetes Self-Management Education and Support (DSMES) provides a structured, person-centered approach to diabetes care. Through one-on-one appointments, individuals can develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to manage their condition. Topics may include understanding blood glucose patterns, exploring nutrition and physical activity changes, and learning how medications and diabetes management technology fit into a patient's care plan.

At Mille Lacs Health System (MLHS), Jayme Westling, PharmD, BC-ADM, Diabetes Care and Education Specialist, provides individualized diabetes education and support. Westling has more than 20 years of experience in retail, hospital, and clinical pharmacy and is board-certified in advanced diabetes management.

MLHS is expanding DSMES appointments beyond Onamia to provide additional access to diabetes education. Westling began seeing patients at the Isle Clinic in October on the second Wednesday of each month. Beginning in November, she will also see patients at the Milaca Clinic on the first Tuesday and third Thursday of each month. Appointments continue to be available in Onamia. To schedule a DSMES appointment, call 320-532-3154.

In addition to individual appointments, MLHS offers a monthly Diabetes Support Group at its Onamia campus. These meetings provide opportunities to learn about diabetes-related topics, share experiences, and connect with others.

In recognition of National Diabetes Month, the November meeting will feature a Diabetes Workshop on Thursday, November 19, from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. in the Key Contributor Conference Room at the MLHS Onamia campus. The workshop is open to individuals with diabetes, those supporting a family member, and anyone interested in learning more. Prediabetes screening and free glucose testing will also be available.

Through education, personalized guidance, and community support, MLHS is helping individuals take an active role in managing their diabetes and improving their overall health.
