Your Voice Matters in Local Healthcare

November 5, 2026

When it comes to healthcare, some of the most valuable insights come from the people receiving care. At Mille Lacs Health System (MLHS), community members have an opportunity to share those perspectives and help shape the future of local healthcare through the Patient Family Advisory Council (PFAC).

Established in 2017, the MLHS Patient Family Advisory Council brings together patients, family members, community representatives, and healthcare staff to share ideas, ask questions, and identify opportunities to improve the patient experience.

The council meets for one hour every other month in a conference room at the MLHS Onamia campus, with a virtual option available for those unable to attend in person. Meetings are led by an MLHS registered nurse and discharge planner, with additional staff representation from departments such as Quality and Marketing. The meetings provide an opportunity for open conversation about healthcare experiences, services, and the needs of the communities MLHS serves.

One of the unique benefits of PFAC is the opportunity for members to connect directly with healthcare staff and leadership. Representatives from various MLHS departments are often invited to meetings to share updates about their services, discuss new programs or changes, and answer questions from community members. Council members also receive regular updates about what's happening throughout the health system.

But PFAC isn't just about keeping members informed. It's about listening to them.

Community members bring perspectives that healthcare employees may not always see. Whether it's an experience during a clinic visit, questions about available services, suggestions for making facilities easier to navigate, or feedback they've heard from friends and neighbors, these conversations can help identify opportunities to make healthcare better for everyone.

Over the years, feedback from PFAC members has contributed to improvements in clinic waiting areas and exam rooms, signage throughout the health system, the Patient Portal, and patient care processes. Sometimes even small suggestions can make a meaningful difference in someone's healthcare experience.

MLHS is currently looking for additional community members to join the council. You don't need a background in healthcare or any special qualifications to participate. Whether you've been a patient yourself, helped care for a family member, or simply have an interest in supporting local healthcare, your perspective is valuable.

Members are encouraged to bring their own experiences, questions, and ideas, as well as feedback they've heard from others in the community. It's also a great opportunity to learn more about the services and people behind your local health system.

The next PFAC meeting is scheduled for Monday, November 16, from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. in the Acute Care Conference Room (upstairs) at the MLHS Onamia campus.
