Pharmacist consultations, managing your meds

March 6, 2024

Mille Lacs Health System has a new service to continue to expand the ways we promote optimal health for our patients. Medication Therapy Management (MTM) is a service provided by clinical pharmacists to consult with patients regarding their medications. These one-on-one appointments offer the opportunity to do an in-depth review of all medications to ensure that they are working well for the patient.

MTM appointments are available to anyone who is a patient of Mille Lacs Health System and has questions about the medications that they take. Appointments generally last between a half hour and one hour. Length of appointment time can be dependent on how many medications the patient is taking, how much information about the medications is desired, and whether this is a first visit or not.  Any family members or caregivers who help with care are welcome to attend.

MTM visits are covered by most insurance companies, including Medicaid. If they are not covered, Mille Lacs Health System, will work with you to make the visit affordable.

The Mayo Clinic reports that at least 20% of all Americans take five or more medications on a regular basis. Many people have difficulty with their medications, whether that is having a hard time affording them, understanding how to take them, or having side effects. MTM visits can possibly help to:

  • Reduce medication costs
  • Manage any side effects from your medications
  • Understand what your medications do and what conditions they are treating
  • Find medications that may work better for you
  • Cut down on the number of medications that you are taking

To make the most of your time with the pharmacist, bring a list of all of your medications and how you take them, as well as all of your medication bottles or pill organizers that you use. It may also help to make a list ahead of time of any questions you have about your medications.

If you are interested in a Medication Therapy Management (MTM) appointment, request a referral from your medical provider at your next appointment. Once the referral is made, a pharmacist will reach out to schedule a time coinciding with your next visit with your provider.
